Stay moisturized!
If you are like me, you have probably wondered is tanning lotion is really necessary when it comes to indoor tanning. There are so many different types of tanning lotion, accelerating creams and gels that it’s hard to know which one to use, if any. Most of them have fun names and smell like a day at the beach, but do they really work?

Some products contain aloe vera gel and essential oils, which act like prism against your skin. This prism affect magnifies the UV rays and gives you a deeper tan faster. Makers of these products state that those who use their products get a better tan than those who use nothing.

Another benefit to using indoor tanning lotions is that they provide the skin with much needed moisture. Healthy skin is necessary to get and maintain a healthy tan so using products that moisturize before and after your tanning session can help your tan stay dark. If you use moisturizers your skin will keep your tan longer, which will allow you to build on that foundation, thus getting a deeper, darker tan. Dry skin flakes peel away your tan layer by layer. Tanning lotions and sunless tanning products provide you with the deep, constant moisture your skin needs during the tanning process. People who avoid using tanning products will not get the extra moisture or a stable tan since tanning tends to dry the skin; they will lose their tan more quickly between sessions, due to dry skin flaking away.

Some tanning products are formulated to provide your skin with additional levels of key tanning ingredients that assist the tanning process. Skin conditioning ingredients include Natural Butters, L-Tyrosine, Liposomial Tyrosine Complexes, Essential Oils, Vitamins, Natural Botanical Extracts, Riboflavin, Hemp Seed Oil, Copper, and other minerals as well as other critical ingredients intended to increase the effectiveness of your tanning time. Indoor tanning lotions contain skin conditioning ingredients that benefit your tanning time in a variety of ways such as maintaining the moisture and magnifying the tanning intensity.

You may notice that some salons offer a tingle or heat cream. These products can be formulated with tingle to aid in the process of tanning. Tingle tanning lotions and sprays contain high concentrations of natural vitamins and botanical oils that stimulate the skin’s micro-circulation by bringing blood closer to the surface of the skin. By stimulating the skin with this type of product, the blood along with melanin is forced to the surface. This can aid in the tanning process and may get you through your tanning plateau. I would recommend starting with lower levels of tingle cream though. They can intensify the affect of the bed and lead to a serious sunburn. Although, typically these burns fade within an hour or so, they are no less pleasant than a real sunburn from the sun. As you progress and your body adjusts to the stimulation, work up to higher levels.

No matter which type of indoor tanning lotion you decide on, the odds are better of keeping your tan longer with the use of them.
